DNA Testing for Ancestry, Traits, and Health

DNA Testing Kit - 23andMe

DNA Testing Kit – 23andMe

In an effort to understand my ancestry from a genetic perspective, I have taken two DNA tests, the AncestryDNA test from two years ago, and one from 23andMe, the sample of which I submitted today. As described in an earlier post, the AncestryDNA test focuses on Autosomal DNA matching, which provides a nice overview of genetic testing for cousin matching and integrates with their family tree features. AncestryDNA recently also came out with their Health DNA report, but, I wanted to get the 23andMe DNA test because it includes the Y-DNA and MtDNA reports for Ancestry, along with the Health, and VIP Health DNA reports

While DNA is 99.5% identical from person to person, it’s the small differences in our chromosomes that make us unique. Our DNA passes from our parents and their parents, going back generations and the DNA testing companies find variants linked to certain health conditions, traits and ancestor groups. However, as 23andMe.com notes, genetics reflects only part of the story when it comes to health and traits. The other variables that influence a person’s trait profile and health predisposition includes: Environment (pollution, sun exposure), Genetic (DNA, ethnicity) and Lifestyle (smoking, exercise).

Ancestry Reports

Ancestry Reports: The 23andMe DNA kit provides ancestry reports as follows: 50+ reports on Ancestry Composition, Ancestry Detail Reports, Family Tree, Maternal Haplogroup, Paternal Haplogroup, Neanderthal Ancestry. A link to a sample Ancestry Report. I’ve seen different 23andMe Ancestry Reports, so, it will be interesting to see which one’s come with my results and how they compare to my AncestryDNA ancestry reports.

Traits Report

Traits Reports: The HealthDNA test from 23andMe provides insights into 30+ following traits: Ability to Match Musical Pitch, Asparagus Odor Detection, Back Hair (available for men only), Bald Spot (available for men only), Bitter Taste, Bunions, Cheek Dimples, Cilantro Taste Aversion, Cleft Chin, Dandruff, Earlope Type, Early Hair Loss (available for men only), Earwax Type, Eye Color, Fear of Heights, Fear of Public Speaking, Finger Length Ratio, Flat Feet, Freckles, Hair Photobleaching (hair lightening from the sun), Hair Texture, Hair Thickness, Ice Cream Flavor Preference, Light or Dark Hair, Misophonia (hatred of sound of chewing), Mosquito Bite Frequency, Motion Sickness, Newborn Hair, Photic Sneeze Reflex, Red Hair, Skin Pigmentation, Stretch Marks, Sweet vs Salty, Toe Length Ratio, Unibrow, Wake-Up Time, Widow’s Peak. DNA Testing Kit – 23andMe

The 23andMe Reports should provide me with further cousin matching and clues for building my ancestry tree. And I hope to leverage the Y-DNA and MtDNA testing to determine with more certainty my links to particular ancestors and regions. The Traits Reports might provide insights into physical characteristics and traits of my ancestors – albeit with a grain of salt. But, using these traits as a baseline to flesh out characteristics of my ancestors could be a fun activity, especially if I can match some traits to actual family photographs to determine their credibility. Although, I’m not sure how useful “Cilantro Taste Aversion” or “Asparagus Odor Detection” and “Ice Cream Flavor Preference” might be for my research. The Health Predisposition Reports make me a little anxious, as they could provide a preview of what ailments I might expect in my future, but, they may also help me understand the kind of ailments and their prevalence in my immediate family and recent ancestors. Once I receive my 23andMe DNA results, I’ll explore the reports and compare them with my AncestryDNA test results to find commonalities and insights.
