3798 | ![]() | Horeshoe Manor This is a photo of the current "Horseshoe Manor," site of the Horseshoe Plantation, near the town of Rapidan in Culpeper County, Virginia. This was the home of my ancestors Anthony Garnett (c.1709-c.1803), his son Robert "Robin" Garnett (1736-1830), and his daughter Elizabeth Garnett. The Waggener family were neighbors of the Garnetts. The plantation of James Herbert Waggener (c.1720-c.1803)was apparently directly adjacent to the "Horseshoe", on the east side along the Rapidan River. The Horseshoe gets its name from its shape, which is formed by the Robinson and Rapidan Rivers into a horseshoe. It was part of the large grant by the English Crown to Governor Alexander Spotswood. Robin Garnett sold the property in 1824. The current house was built in 1859. The library is built on the foundation of the original house owned by the Garnetts. According to tradition, Anthony Garnett was buried in the family cemetery here, but since there is no headstone to mark his grave, it is impossible to verify this. (From R. Waggener) | |
