Grandpa worked on the interior of the passenger cars, probably also diners, etc, doing finishing carpenter work..Grandin Court Grocery was started in 1922 or 1923.- Violet and her brother, Wesley ran the store. They ran the store for 16 years and got out in 1938.- Melvn and Elmer delivered groceries to customers.- There is a photo taken in front of the store with Violet and Reeves standing there. It shows the dliivery truck in one of the shots.- There is a story about the robbery which took place at the store onenight. It made the newspaper and we have a clipping of that.In Grandpa's story to us, he said; they had a line from the store to their house with bells on it. when it rang, he got his shotgun and actually shot a bugla who ran awayr. He or they shot back with a rifle. There were 4 men, 1in the car (think it was a convertable M.O.), 2 at the front door and one in the back. Then my notes have a strory which might have been another time-- Somebody broke in and got cigars, candy, silk hose (stockings M.O) --took the cash register and took it over by the (Brook's house (neighbors) ),and pried it open and ook 600 pennies. How Cullen and Violet met.He met Grandma at( Violet,s ?auntís or maybe his sisterís?) house when Mary lived in the old "lumber houseî .located on the Griggsís home place.Cullen and Violet built their house on Woodlawn Ave. in 1927. Their was a little house under the cigar (catalpa) tree next to the driveway and garage where they lived until they built the big house.. It wasalso ner the water well.Cullen kekpt the clock which was in the little house and built a shelf for it, kept it next to the refrigerator in the kitchen. He was the only one ëallowedí to wind it as it was îtouchyî. Grandp had o climb onto a stool to wind the clock. Marie inherited this clock.Cullen was a carpenter by trade. he built lots of things including clocks, furniture, etc. He sharpened saws for folks, raised bees and sold honey among other things he did.Marie has the lock and key to it for Grandpaís side of the garage. Elmer parked his car in the 2nd stall of the garage until they built their own garage many many yars later. I think it was the 60ís...
